The aging process causes your skin to stop producing as much collagen and elastin as it did when you were younger. As a result, the skin becomes thinner and less elastic, and consequently starts to wrinkle and droop.

The aging process also causes a loss of tissue from under the facial skin. Without tissue to hold it up, the thinning facial skin starts to sag. This is most apparent around the jawline when the skin starts to form jowls. These jowls can often be treated through non-invasive skin tightening procedures.

Radiofrequency Treatments

Using ThermiTight technology, radiofrequency energy passes through the outer layer of the skin and heats up the deeper layers of skin. This heating effect causes the tissues to tighten, reducing skin sagging and the appearance of jowls. Tightening up sagging jowls can instantly restore a younger look. The treatment also stimulates the skin to produce more collagen, improving the texture, thickness, and elasticity of the skin.

However, radiofrequency skin tightening treatments are not effective for patients with very loose skin, deep jowls, or heavy wrinkling. They are ideal for younger individuals just beginning to experience jowl formation, or for older individuals who have had a facelift several years prior and just want to touch up a jawline that has started to sag again.

What to Expect

Prior to treatment, the face will be cleaned. The area to be treated is cooled with a special spray and then the probe is pressed against the face for a few seconds. There will be a sensation of deep heat. Approximately one inch of the face is treated with each application of the probe. Treating the jowl area generally takes less than 30 minutes. Patients can immediately resume their regular activities after treatment. Only one radiofrequency treatment is necessary to tighten skin however, maintenance treatments can be performed in the future.

Recovery

Most patients experience no side effects. Occasionally there will be some mild temporary skin redness, swelling, or blisters. The jowls should be visibly tighter immediately after treatment. The effect will gradually improve over the next few months as the skin produces collagen in response to the treatment. The skin will continue to get tighter, smoother, and younger-looking. The full effect is generally achieved about six months after the treatment.

How Long Do Results Last?

The effects of a radiofrequency skin tightening procedure usually last for around two years. At that time, the procedure can be repeated.
