Obstetric fistula is a devastating and preventable condition in which a hole is left in the birth canal due to prolonged labor without medical assistance. Obstetric fistula causes chronic incontinence and, most often, also leaves women with a stillborn baby. Dr. Thomas travels to Africa every two years to perform restorative surgery for women suffering from obstetric fistula. She produced an award-winning documentary on this work and may be seen on YouTube at lifechangingmoments.org. Her last trip to Africa in 2019 she went with the charity Ssubi Is Hope as their medical director, to specifically address how to perform and to prevent fistula surgery.
